Asking God to Change Me

Asking God to Change Me?

For years I have prayed for God to change me! You ask, “Why would anyone pray that, knowing that He will take you through circumstances which you have no control.” I want to be less of me and more about Him! I like the analogy a piano tuner gave me once. She said if a piano has been out of tune for a while, you don’t get it in perfect tune right away because if you did you would break/destroy the wire. God doesn’t want to destroy us, so He slowly uses things/people/circumstances to change us.

When we are His, we want to submit to His will and what is best for our lives! Many times, we think we know what is best but we can’t see the BIG picture. He is in the process of orchestrating everything for our good and His glory! Romans 8:28-29 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

When we are in submission to His will, our focus is off of ourselves and on Him. We desire what He wants! Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

In our Sunday school class this past Sunday and in worship service, my heart was convicted of some issues which I knew I needed to deal with. Yes, my toes were stepped on but my heart was open and tender to hear the message. I tend to shy away from people who appear dirty and years ago there was a man who looked like skid-row Joe in our church.  His clothes were dirty and tattered; he needed to shave and his hair looked like it hadn’t been washed in a long time. His pants needed hemming and the Lord convicted me to tell him I would hem his pants. I argued with God for a while, saying that he was dirty and I didn’t want to touch him. In an ever so gentle (not audible) whisper, He said to me, “Wanda, I touched you when you were dirty.” Yes, my sins made me dirty and if man was watching me and my actions…what would they see?

Yes, I still have issues with being dirty but it shouldn’t steer me away from being kind to someone. What if that person doesn’t know Christ and hasn’t been born again? Who will bend the knee and say, “Send me!” Our Sunday school lesson was out of the book of Mark and the pastor’s message was out of Matthew. God used those two messages to tune my heart to His! I am His child and want to be obedient to His commands. My biases/prejudices can deter me in a different direction. I want to be in total submission to His will because I definitely do not want to be a hindrance in someone coming to know God’s son, Jesus Christ!
